As he broke aviation records, his influence as a defense contractor grew until he had the clout and skills to go boldly, where no human had gone before. According to his unreleased autobiography, during his boyhood radio operator days, he received a secret communique which included plans for a vessel. In ‘51, that vessel blasted off from a small pad near Nevada’s Groom Lake with The Aviator piloting. He returned to Earth, months later. He and his vessel were unharmed but he remained silent on his experience, muttering only “I hear lizards” absently as technicians removed him from the ship, which he ordered scrapped soon after.
